Research Core

The Columbia Center for Injury Science and Prevention (CCISP) aims to “Build the Science of Safety.” This is achieved by bringing together university, community, and government partners to fast-track research and programs focused on injury prevention. The goal is to improve safety and health in communities in the New York / New England region and across the nation.

Adverse Childhood Experiences and HealthThe impact of structural environmental factors on adverse childhood experiences and injury outcomes.

PD/PI: Paris "AJ" Adkins-Jackson, PhD MPH, Assistant Professor, Departments of Epidemiology and Sociomedical Sciences, Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University

PD/PI: Yoshira Ornelas Van Horne, PhD Assistant Professor, Environmental Health Sciences, University of California Los Angeles, Fielding School of Public Health

Transportation Safety and Health:  Physical environmental strategies to reduce road traffic crash risks and health inequities for vulnerable road users.

PD/PI: Christopher Morrison, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Epidemiology, Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health

Goals of the CE24-001 research core for the period 2024-2029 are

-to foster interdisciplinary collaborations and partnerships across our university, city, region, and other ICRCs to advance the field of injury science and prevention.

-Reduce morbidity and mortality from injuries by creating, disseminating, and translating scientific knowledge, developing innovative and multi-level training programs, and promoting best practices and evidence-based interventions.

-Provide various scientific and technical support services and develop and deliver multifaceted injury prevention research

-Engage in bidirectional sharing of expertise with global, national, state, and regional policymakers, government agencies, community partners, and researchers from a diverse array of stakeholder groups, individuals, scientific disciplines, and practitioners to meaningfully translate injury science into action and publicly elevate the field of injury science and prevention.

CE019-001: The goal of the CCISP research core during 2019-2024 was to establish academic excellence in the areas of injury-related policy evaluation, translational research, and research methods. To achieve our goals, CCISP investigators are conducting cutting-edge studies on the causes and outcomes of injuries and using multifaceted approaches to reduce the occurrence and mitigate the consequences of injuries. Our research projects address falls in older adults by translating efficacious prevention programs to local communities, the cost-effectiveness of federally funded safe-routes-to-school programs in reducing child pedestrian injuries, and the impact of state medical marijuana laws on drug involvement in fatal motor vehicle crashes. Dr. Sonali Rajan and Dr. Kara Rudolph co-direct the Center’s Research Core Programs.
